<p>A countershaft transmission (10) includes first and second directional clutches (88, 120) and first, second and third speed clutches (126, 128, 130) of the hydraulically actuated, rotating disc type to provide three forward speeds and three reverse speeds for a track-type tractor or the like. Included is an input shaft (12) with first and second gears (66, 70) connected to rotate therewith that define midplanes (170, 172) normal to the input shaft (12). The directional clutches (88, 120) and the speed clutches (126, 128, 130) are located axially between the midplanes (170, 172) in radially aligned relationships and a plurality of other constantly meshing gears (78, 82, 110, 114, 132, 134, 140, 144, 150, 154) are used including at least one pair of gears (78, 110) located axially exteriorly of the midplanes for compactness and to promote speed reduction ratio flexibility. A second embodiment provides six forward speeds by adding a directional clutch (174) and another gear (176) within the same compact dimensions.</p> |
