Pattern recognition apparatus supplying, remotely and without contact, a panoramic image of a surrounding space or portion of space 6, including means for measuring the distance between each point of the space and the apparatus which comprise: a transmitter 2 transmitting a beam of parallel rays of coherent light, scanning means 4 displacing this beam in a plane and means for detecting the elevation alpha p of the beam; an electrooptical detector 15 detecting the light reflected by the environment and means for detecting the elevation alpha c of the reflected beam; a rotating support 16 common to the transmitter and to the receiver; information processing means 18 calculating the position of each point of the space. <IMAGE>
