In setting the designated area, a recorded region is detected from the image data on the present scanning line, and presence or absence of a signal is detected from the data that represents the designated region on the present scanning line, this signal representing the designated region. A recorded region surrounded by adjacent designated regions holding the signal is assumed to hold a signal that indicates that the recorded region is within the designated region. When there is a signal that represents the designated region, it is determined whether the region represented by the signal is continuous to the designated region in the previous scanning line or not. When it is determined that the region is continuous, the region represented by the signal is regarded to be a temporarily designated region on the present scanning line and when it is determined that the region is not continuous, the region designated by the signal is regarded to be a designated region on the present scanning line. A signal is detected that indicates a non-designated region in the temporarily designated region, and the region indicated by the signal is regarded to be a non-designated region. A region in which the non-designated region is excluded from the temporarily designated region is added to the designated region on the present scanning line.
