The method entails either the organic pollutants being oxidised to acids and the conductivity of the water being determined or the pollutants being completely broken down to CO2 and the latter being determined, with at least a part of the water being fed, directly or after complete deionisation, to an electrochemical cell (3) which is equipped with a solid electrolyte (4) and is used for generating ozone and then being passed to a reaction vessel (7) for ultraviolet irradiation and to a separator (8) for separating gas and liquid. It is possible in addition to provide a water return line (11). The method can be carried out continuously or batchwise and intermittently. <IMAGE>
