In the case of a nail having a head 2, which is upset on the shank 1, and a tip 3, which is chamfered at the free shank end, the shank 1 is selected to be longer than the thickness of the materials which are to be connected. When the nail is driven in, the free end of the shank 1, in order to form an anchorage, is clinched at the rear side of the connecting point as soon as its tip 3 makes contact, during said driving-in procedure, with a hard underlying structure. In order that the nail has a particularly high resistance to being drawn out, the shank 1, following a length section 4 which is formed near the tip 3 and is inclined with respect to the axis of the shank, is provided, at least over a large part of the shank length, with moulded-in circumferential grooves 5. <IMAGE>
