In a process for the production of a preform for optical waveguides (optical fibres) in which a tubular element is coated internally and in which, for the production of the internal coating, a soot is produced, applied to the inner wall of the tube and sintered to give a glassy layer, it is provided that the soot is purified by a separate step before the sintering.
