A motor vehicle, especially a passenger car, has a rear engine and an air deflection device, arranged in the rear area, which can be moved from a rest position running flush with the adjacent body into an extended operating position, the air deflection device in the operating position running at a distance from the body and a transversely running gap area, lying behind this, viewed in the direction of travel, and laterally outer, longitudinally running gap areas being closed by covering elements. So that, on the one hand, the air deflection device can be extended relatively far and, on the other, the rear covering element in the retracted rest position of the air deflection device - viewed in the longitudinal direction - takes up as little space as possible, the covering element for the rear gap area, at least locally, has concertina-like sections which, in the rest position of the air deflection device, lie folded together one on top of another, whereas in the operating position the concertina-like sections assume an approximately flat position relative to one another.
