An opto-electronic system for automatic braking of vehicles comprises an optical section, an electronic section and an operating section. In the optical section infrared rays are used to detect a moving or stationary obstacle at a given distance on the trajectory of the vehicle. In the electronic section the signal from an emitter and receiver is processed. This section is an electronic system comprising the control with a microprocessor which processes the data and supplies the driver with information on a display unit and an audio- visual alarm. If the obstacle does not leave the trajectory and if the driver does not react, the microprocessor instructs the operating section to perform the braking by means of an hydraulic operating element. The system is designed to assist the driver by warning him of the existence of an obstacle and, in the event that the driver does not react, to immobilise automatically the vehicle. <IMAGE>
