The invention relates to a method for the electrodeposition of satiny nickel-containing coatings on metal surfaces, using acidic aqueous bath compositions containing nickel and, if appropriate, other metal ions, boric acid, primary brighteners, one or more emulsifiers and anionic surfactants. The method is characterised in that metal surfaces are pretreated in a conventional manner for electrodeposition of metal layers, the pretreated metal surfaces are brought into contact with a composition which contains water-soluble nickel salts, optionally water-soluble salts of further layer-forming metals, boric acid, primary brighteners, anionic surfactants, organic emulsifiers, optionally quaternary ammonium compounds and compounds of the general formula (I), <IMAGE> where R<2> is hydrogen or a metal ion and R<1> is a C1-6 alkyl radical or a radical of the general formula (II), <IMAGE> in which R<3> is a hydroxyl group or a C1-6 alkyl radical, and the metal surfaces are rinsed and dried or subjected to further electroplating in a suitable manner.
