An asbestos-free flexible gasket material for, in particular, cylinder-head gaskets, exhaust flange gaskets and similar gaskets of, in particular, internal-combustion engines comprises a fibre nonwoven comprising fibrillated p-polyaramid fibres, non-fibrillated organic synthetic fibres having an increased heat resistance of above 200@C, an elongation at break of greater than 15% and a modulus of elasticity of less than 15 kN/mm<2>, and mineral fillers, organic binders and optionally mineral fibres, which has optionally been reinforced by metals and impregnated and has been produced by a papermaking process, has a flat course of the deformation characteristic line under pressure loading during installation so that, in the case of gaskets made from this material, a sealing pressure matched precisely to the engine conditions can be set in the border region, in particular between combustion chamber openings and the remainder of the surface. <IMAGE>
