Vibration isolation between a source and a mounting is provided by means of a vibration-cancelling actuator with a shear isolator placed in series with the source. Mechanical and magnetic actuators are disclosed, a preferred mechanical actuator (Figure 3) including its own shear isolation with a ratio of compliance in shear and axial directions of at least 50:1.
