PURPOSE:To easily realize simple pulse oscillation of optical short pulse or rapid repetition of pulse oscillation, by restricting the lifetime of a YAG laser resonator so as to be less than a predetermined value in the YAG laser resonator where the output light of a semiconductor laser is used as an excitation light source, thereby providing a saturable absorber in the resonator. CONSTITUTION:The following two multilayer films: the first dielectric multilayer film 3, through which output light from a semiconductor laser 2 penetrate and, from which YAG laser beam reflected as well as the second dielectric multilayer film 4, from which the output light from the semiconductor laser 2 is reflected and, through which the YAG laser lights penetrate are provided at both end faces of a YAG rod 1. A YAG laser resonator is composed of an output mirror 5 and the first dielectric multilayer film 3. Further, a saturable absorber 6 is inserted in this resonator. The whole resonator length of the YAG laser is adjusted so that the lifetime of the resonator is less than 1ns. When operated, a pulser 7 allows the semiconductor laser to be driven at a pulse current which is shorter by about 200mum to oscillate the passive Q switch of a YAG laser oscillator. Then the output lights are condensed into the YAG rod 1 through a lens 8. |
