A damping system for pressure and flow disturbances in the pulp suspension flow of a paper machine, intended for placement in communication with the intake box or intake pipe system (40) of the paper machine's intake box. The system includes a closed container (20) and an air chamber (28; 43) inside the container (20), as well a space through which the pulp suspension to flow. An intake pipe (18; 40a) and an outflow pipe (15; 40b) for the pulp suspension flow (F) are connected to the container (20). The damping container (20) is fitted with an inter-lid system (30; 30A) with a significantly lower density than the pulp suspension. The inter-lid system is designed to move freely on the surface (S) of the pulp suspension flowing into the damping container in such a way that the lid system (30; 30A) essentially wholly covers the free surface (S) of the pulp suspension. The inter-lid system (30, 30A) should preferably consist of a single plate-shaped inter-lid whose shape corresponds to the shape of the horizontal cutting of the damping container at the surface of the pulp suspension. Between the lid and the damping container's (20) outer cover,(23;41a,41b;42b) a hollow space (27) remains such that the inter-lid (30, 30A) may freely float on the surface (S) of the pulp suspension.<IMAGE>
