The method detects an obstacle near a vehicle and increases the reliability of the results obtained. Waves are transmitted from a vehicle 1 as a narrow beam 2 and reflected waves are received along the same narrow beam 2 and along a second wide beam 3; a distinction is made between the reception of waves within and beyond the distance 4 above which there is no risk if the vehicle changes lanes on the road; the orientation and width of the beams 2 and 3 are such that the presence of an obstacle 5 can be detected with certainty. The method enables simple distance-measuring sensors, using ultrasound for example, to be used efficiently and safely to deal with problems geometrically similar to that of the dead zone of vehicles. <IMAGE>
