PURPOSE:To reliably regulate a gear shift timing and to provide uniform gear shift performance, by a method wherein, from a change in a rotation speed ratio between an input and an output shaft, power ON or power OFF of an automatic speed change gear is decided. CONSTITUTION:During gear shift in a state in which drive from the output shaft side is impossible, from the rotation speeds of an input and an output shaft detected by the respective sensors, a rotation speed ratio is calculated by means of a computing means. When the rotation speed ratio is started to decrease, it is decided by a deciding means that an automatic speed change gear is in a state in which drive from the input shaft side is not effected, i.e. in a power OFF state, and a solenoid for gear shift is switched in a given delay time by means of a timing regulating means. Meanwhile, when the rotation speed ratio is not decreased during gear shift, it is decided that it is in a power ON state, and the solenoid for gear shift is immediately switched. This constitution enables reliable detection of power OFF, and enables execution of uniform gear shift prevented from the occurrence of a gear shift shock through regulation of a timing.
