The method and the device make it possible to produce, with relatively good accuracy, a drilling in a body comprising a pilot drilling, according to the following series of operations: in a first instance, the bevelled 16 end 15 of a centre punch 14 is positioned substantially in alignment with the pilot drilling, the centre punch being connected to a base part 3 of a tool carrier 2 in a guide housing 6; in a second instance, a first force is exerted with a thrust cylinder 23 on the centre punch 14 to move it until the bevel 16 matches the edge of the pilot drilling; in a third instance, a second force is then exerted between the base part 3 and the body, to bring a reference surface 5 of the base part 3 into contact with a complementary surface of the body; in a fourth instance, the centre punch is removed from the housing and finally, in a fifth instance, the tool inserted into the positioned component is actuated in order to make the drilling. The invention finds a particularly advantageous application for rivetting together the structural plates of aircraft. <IMAGE>
