PURPOSE:To obtain the above fiber capable of removing odoriferous basic substances without need of making any chemical adherence thereto, by treating at specified temperatures activated carbon fiber of particular specific surface area in an atmosphere containing specified amount or more of oxygen gas. CONSTITUTION:Fiber consisting of a carbonizable substance such as polyacrylonitrile or coal pitch is made infusible or resistant to flame, in the presence of, if needed, oxygen, followed by activation in the presence of an activation gas such as steam at 600-1,300 deg.C to produce an activated carbon fiber as the raw material with a specific surface area of 50-1,200m<2>/g. Thence, this activated carbon fiber is treated at 400-650 deg.C in an atmosphere containing >=2vol.% of oxygen gas, thus obtaining the objective carbon fiber with a specific surface area of 100-1,500m<2>/g and the ratio of the bonded oxygen to the carbon of >=18.5wt.%. |
