A process for the winding of threads to form cross-wound bobbins by precision winding is carried out in such a way that the traversing speed is reduced in proportion to the rotational speed of the spindle and is increased in order to achieve a low winding ratio. First a main winding is wound with a first winding ratio, almost until the intended maximum diameter of the bobbin is achieved, and then a protective winding is wound over with a second winding ratio, the second winding ratio being lower than the first winding ratio and therefore being selected with a comparatively large pitch angle, even at the end of the protective winding. <IMAGE>
