Phase-shifted alternating currents at the same frequency are required throughout telecommunications technology, for example in the case of quadrature-amplitude modulation. Until now, very complex circuits have been required for this purpose. In the case of the present invention, the phase shift is produced by means of a counting element, in that the desired phase angle is produced by the ratio of the overall output count of the counting element to the output count of the desired phase shift. In this case, there are electronic switching means in the outputs, which produce unipolar or bipolar square-waveform pulses by means of the coded outputs. Sinusoidal alternating currents are then filtered out of the square-waveform pulses by means of filters, said square-waveform pulses actually being phase-shifted.
