A shock absorber with adjustable damping characteristic is described, especially for motor vehicles, which has at least one cylinder filled with a damping medium and a piston rod, which immerses in the cylinder forming a seal and which on its cylinder-side end carries a piston sealed off from the cylinder wall, which divides the cylinder space into two chambers; at the same time the piston-piston rod arrangement, as bypasses to a main flow of the damping medium, has connecting passages acting between the chambers, which can be opened or closed by electrically controlled control slide valves. The control slide valves are each respectively capable of reciprocating on a seat in order to move into the closed position and open position relative to the assigned bypass; oily damping medium can pass through a feed line between seat and control slide valve in such a way that a pressure film is built up, which as hydrostatic bearing facilitates the movement of the slide valve.
