A method for producing thermal energy by splitting water and the hydrogen thereby produced is distinguished according to the invention in that a temperature generator is used to generate a constant high-temperature zone which is thermally isolated from the outside, in that water vapour is introduced into the high-temperature zone, and in that all the hydrogen released by thermal splitting of the water vapour is burned directly in the high-temperature zone with the oxygen released during splitting. In this process, at most so much water vapour is applied or useful thermal energy is dissipated that at least a temperature level sufficient for thermal splitting is maintained in the high-temperature zone. This method can be used to generate virtually any quantity of heat in an exceptionally economic and environmentally friendly way in conjunction with reduced use of classical energy carriers.
