#CMT# #/CMT# The module i.e. optical wavelength selecting switch (50), has an optical switching matrix (1), and optical elements e.g. liquid crystal cells, including a spatial light manipulation unit e.g. optical reflector, configured in coupling states. A control unit (9) i.e. programmable electronic controller, selectively controls the unit in a reconfiguration mode that is protected against faults e.g. collision, and in a rapid reconfiguration mode. The unit controlled in the rapid mode, is reconfigured towards a final coupling state to rapidly attain the final state than in the protected mode. #CMT# : #/CMT# An independent claim is also included for a method of controlling a spatial light manipulation unit of an optical wavelength switching module. #CMT#USE : #/CMT# Module i.e. optical wavelength selecting switch (claimed), for switching an optical signal based on an optical wavelength, in a photonic/transparent optical switching node e.g. transparent optical cross connect i.e. 2 by 2 optical add drop cross connect, and reconfigurable optical add drop multiplexer, of a wavelength division multiplexing network, in an optical telecommunication field, and as a protection module with a hardware protection scheme of type 1(1+1) or of type N(ratio between 1 and N), where N is a positive integer greater than or equal to 2. #CMT#ADVANTAGE : #/CMT# The module improves the protection of any switching nodes against faults of the optical switching matrix, and increases reconfiguration speed of the matrix.
