A refuse collection vehicle has a pair of hoists (15,16) at the rear of a body (14) of the vehicle. Each hoist includes a carriage (28) which slides up and down on guide bars (32,33). A bin-carrier (17) is pivotally mounted on the carriage. Engagement of an element (39) on the carrier with a fixed abutment (38) during upward movement of the carriage causes the carrier to tip.
