A projection-type colour display apparatus is disclosed that comprises an optical system containing a light source (20) and at least one set of projection lenses (30,50); an electro-optical cell (70) that forms a monochromatic display image; a colour filter (40) having picture elements of two or more colours; and a screen (80) onto which an enlarged colour display image is projected; wherein the colour filter (40) is disposed separately from the electro-optical cell (70).
