A method of forming fibrous silicon carbide and silicon nitride comprising the steps of mixing a silicon source and microfibrous carbon to form a silicon-carbon mixture, and thereafter heating the silicon-carbon mixture to a temperature of at least 1300 DEG C in the presence of a non-oxidizing gas or under vacuum. The microfibrous carbon containing at least one transition metal, such as: Fe, Co, Ni, Ru, Rh, Re, Os, Mn, Cr, V, Ti, Cu, W, Pt, Pd, Mo and Au. It is preferred that the gas be one selected from the group consisting of H2, N2, Ar, He and mixtures thereof. This method produces fibrous silicon carbide with a morphology similar to the starting carbon, thus reducing the yield of undesirable particulate products. The presence of the transition metal in the microfibrous carbon also enhances the formation of fibrous silicon carbide and silicon nitride. |
