PURPOSE:To contrive the miniaturization and simplification over the entire part of a sensor by forming the covering of an optical fiber as a conductive covering and supplying prescribed current to a part or the whole of the conductive covering, then controlling the phase of the propagated light by the Joule heat of the covering. CONSTITUTION:This method is constituted of an optical fiber 1, the conductive covering 2 formed on the outside circumference of the optical fiber 1 and a current source 3 which supplies the prescribed current in accordance with a control signal 4. The current source 3 is connected by a conductor 5 to one end side of the covering 2 and the other end side of the covering 2 is grounded 6 through the conductor 5'. The Joule heat corresponding to the resistance of the covering 2 is generated by passing the control current from the current source 3 to the conductive covering 2 according to the control signal 4, by which the length and refractive index of the optical fiber 1 in this part are changed and the phase of the light propagated in the optical fiber 1s controlled. The miniaturization and simplification over the entire part of the sensor are thereby contrived. |
