The invention relates to a device and to a method for softening untreated water having at least one first and one second softening column (1, 2) containing a depleting and regeneratable water treatment agent, a supply line (3) for introducing untreated water in the softening columns (1, 2), and a removal line (4) for the removal of softened water from the softening columns (1, 2), wherein one softening column (1, 2) may be connected to the supply line in an alternating fashion (3) via actuating means (5a, 5b, 5c, 5d), while the other softening column (1, 2) may be disconnected from the supply line (3) by the actuating means (5a, 5b, 5c, 5d). In view of the object of reducing or preventing a decline in the quality of the softened water due to stagnation, said device and method are characterized by a control mechanism (5) that detects the degree of depletion of the water treatment agent in each softening column (1, 2) and connects the supply line (3) to either the first or the second softening column (1, 2) depending on the degree of depletion such that the water treatment agents are gradually reduced in an alternating fashion. |
