A process for recovering sulphur from a feed gas stream rich in hydrogen sulphide comprises (a) partially combusting with an oxygen- enriched gas in a Claus reaction furnace zone, (b) cooling a combustion effluent with an attendant condensn. and sepn. of sulphur in a first condensn. zone, (c) passing a remaining effluent stream through at least one stage of converting in a catalytic Claus reaction zone and cooling with the attendant condensn. and sepn. of sulphur in a additional condensn. zone, and (d) recycling a portion of the reacted effluent stream from the first condensn. zone to the reaction furnace zone in order to moderate the temp. of the reaction furnace zone.
