An apparatus for receiving mobile service data and a control method thereof are provided to be robust to errors and compatible with a general receiver upon transmission of a mobile service data packet containing the mobile service data and PSI/PSIP information through channels. An apparatus for receiving mobile service data includes a signal receiving unit(910), a demodulating unit(920), an application control unit(980). The signal receiving unit receives compress-encoded mobile service data. The demodulating unit demodulates the compress-encoded mobile service data received by the signal receiving unit. The application control unit controls storage of the mobile service data. The signal receiving unit receives the mobile service data in a burst on section from main service data and mobile service data multiplexed in a burst arrangement with the burst on section and a burst off section. The demodulating unit has a known data detector detecting known data information inserted in valid data to be transmitted.
