The invention relates to a method and a device for closing the end of a pipe 1. In the method according to the invention a stay 2 is arranged around the pipe end, and a counter-stay 3 is arranged inside the pipe end, in such a way that the stays are pressed against one another and against the pipe end by a pressure acting in the pipe. The device according to the invention thus comprises a stay, which surrounds the pipe end on the outside, a counter-stay, which is braced against the pipe end on the inside, and a functional element 4, which due to the effect of the pressure in the pipe presses the stay and the counter-stay against one another. <IMAGE>
