PURPOSE: To prepare carbon fiber capable of imparting carbon fiber reinforced composites not causing degradation in strength at higher temperatures by transforming the surface layer of carbon fiber into silicon carbide to improve the wettability to metal or ceramics as matrix. CONSTITUTION: This conjugated carbon fiber is prepared by the high temperature treatment of carbon fiber e.g. comprising PAN-based fiber at 1,300-2,300 deg.C in an atmosphere of silicon monoxide gas formed from a mixture of silicon powder and silicon oxide powder to transform a part or the whole of a fiber surface layer into silicon carbide. The conjugated carbon fiber is improved in the wettability to metals or ceramics as matrix, can give carbon fiber reinforced composites not causing degradation in strength due to the delamination of silicon carbide layer and capable of being stably used even at higher temperatures, and is suitable as a fiber reinforced composite material for space and flight. |
