A plastic material suited for use as a plug in contact with the skin, is made by reaching a mixt. of about 1 pt. wt. powdered acrylamide/betamethacrylyloxyrthyltrimethylammonium methylsulphate copolymer; =10 pts., pref. 4-9, of polyacrylamide contg. =4 wt.% copolymerised Na acrylate; and 2-5 pts. ethylene glycol; to form a semi-solid gel. The acrylamide/sulphate copolymer contains 10-40, pref. 14-23, wt. % sulphate, the rest being acrylamide. The material can be used as an annular sealing plug for an appts. joined to the skin, being provided with a central opening permitting the insertion of a surgical orifice. It is placed between the skin and the supporting sheet of the appts., and is specially designed for use after abdominal surgical operations such as colostomy, etc., where an opening in the skin permits evacuation. It can also be used in conjunction with a skin bandage. The compsn., being non-nutritive, does not maintain micro-organism growth. Hence stored material does not become contaminated. It becomes adhesive in the moist state, thus ensuring that the appts. attached to it is maintained in position. Furthermore, its cohesiveness prevents fragmentation during use. It lasts longer in use, and has a longer storage life, than previously used materials, which do not have the other advantages mentioned. It is relatively supple and elastic in use, and substance adhering to the skin or clothing after use can easily be removed by washing with soap and water.
|
