MANUFACTURE OF HARDENED BUILT-UP ROLL

PURPOSE:To manufacture a hardened built-up roll having superior wear resistance, satisfactory heat resistance and durability by forming a built-up layer of low carbon steel on the peripheral surface of the body of a roll by build-up welding and by carburizing and hardening the surface of the layer. CONSTITUTION:A built-up layer having about 3-10mm thickness is formed on the peripheral surface of the body of a roll by build-up welding with a welding rod of low carbon steel or low alloy steel having satisfactory weldability. The layer is carburized to about 2-3mm carburization depth so that the concn. of carbon near the surface becomes >=about 0.8% and then the layer is hardened. A roll nearly free from defects and having high surface hardness is easily obtd. at a low cost.
