<p>In a powder, e.g. X-ray, diffraction apparatus, a circularly symmetric diffraction pattern is recorded in a stimulable phosphor, e.g. in the form of sheet (20, 48). The 2-D diffraction pattern is read out using means (22, 24, 26, 28, 55, 58) for scanning it with stimulating radiation. Means (30, 32, 34, 36, 56) for collecting and converting the resulting stimulated fluorescence into data corresponding to the two dimensional diffraction pattern are used with means (38) for processing the data to produce a 1-D signal representing the average of the 2-D diffraction pattern at points equidistant from the center of the diffraction pattern.</p> |
