A method for constructing superconducting structures from a number of superconducting sub-units (20-25; 30) by tessellation. This enables relatively large superconducting structures to be formed in a variety of different shapes and configurations. The superconducting sub-units (20-25; 30) may be used to form a planar surface or a curved surface and means (16, 13) are provided to enable an external current to be passed through the superconducting sub-unit (10) so as to drive a magnetic body levitated above the structure. This method of construction may also be used to construct superconducting solenoids and magnets (40) in the form of Bitter disks (35) and is particularly useful for constructing structures from the recently discovered high temperature ceramic superconductors.
|
