Short-cut carbon fibres for reinforcement of thermoplastics have hitherto been obtained by cutting multifilament yarns having approximately 10,000 filaments. The new process is to make it possible to use yarns having more than 100,000 filaments. Multifilament yarns having at least 100,000 filaments are fanned open and split up by combs which are inclined in the direction of yarn movement. As in yarns with a small number of filaments, there is no formation of fluff and no felting of the fibres. For production of reinforcing fibres. <IMAGE>
