PURPOSE:To accurately protrude the head of a printing sheet by a method wherein when the printing sheet is detected by a printing sheet-detecting means, the sheet is fed backward until it comes to be not detected, and is then fed forward by a predetermined amount. CONSTITUTION:A head-protruding key is depressed. When a printing P is present in a branching paper passage 59 or a sheet feeder 11 and has been inserted to or beyond a position at which an optical sensor 35 is turned ON, a driving stepping motor 27 is reversely rotated to feed the paper P backward. Next, when the sensor 35 stops detecting the paper P, the motor 27 is stopped. Then, the motor 27 is driven forward for a short time, after which the ON state of the sensor 35 is judged affirmative, and the paper is fed forward by a predetermined amount, whereby the operation of protruding the head of the paper P is completed.
