The invention relates to a manually operable marking device (1) for applying or renewing marking lines on traffic surfaces, sports grounds and the like. The marking device (1) has a chassis (2) in which a paint container (7) with a paint outlet nozzle (9) is suspended. The paint container (7) is constructed as an unpressurised gravity container, in which the paint outlet nozzle (9) is arranged in the region of its bottom edge (8) located at the rear in the direction of travel of the chassis (2).
