The heating up of the passenger compartment of motor vehicles which is brought about by direct sunlight requires effective cooling which can usually be effected both by opening the sunroof of a motor vehicle arranged in the roof of the motor vehicle and on the other hand by means of a fan which is connected to a solar cell battery mounted on the sunroof of the motor vehicle. According to the invention, the solar current, produced as a function of the intensity of the solar radiation, of a solar cell battery arranged on the sunroof of the motor vehicle is used to control the sunroof, the sunroof of the motor vehicle being opened more when there is a high intensity of solar radiation, which would result in high temperatures in the passenger compartment, than when there is a lower intensity of solar radiation. The result of this is that the warm air produced in the vehicle can be drawn off by the opened sunroof of the motor vehicle. The sunroof of the motor vehicle can also be controlled as a function of the internal temperature of the motor vehicle.
