In an appliance for pulling a single crystal from a crucible (29) by means of a traction rope (20) to whose end arranged above the crucible (29) a seed crystal holder (26) is attached and which is linked to a driven take-up drum (8) which is mounted in a casing (5) which can rotate about the traction rope, the casing (5) has a first chamber (3) enclosed on all sides, in which the take-up drum (8) is held on a driven horizontally arranged shaft (7), the shaft (7) being run through a wall (6) in a sealing manner and being in effective connection with a shaft coupled to the drive motor (16) via a gear system (9, 37) provided in a second adjacent chamber (4) of the casing (5) and via a transmission gear (gear train) (49). In the first chamber (3) below the wind-off drum (8) a rope guide wheel (11) is rotatably, but axially non-displaceably supported on a pin (10) attached to a casing wall (6), via which rope guide wheel the traction rope (20) is run to a longitudinal hole (23) in the lower casing cover (21), which hole is located vertically above the melt (28). <IMAGE>
