In order to obtain a piston of low overall height in an internal combustion engine, it is proposed that piston and connecting rod be held together by way of a ball joint. For this purpose, all or part of the connecting rod (4), or the connecting rod small end (9) is formed in two parts (12, 13) by an axial separation (11) and the two parts (12, 13) of the connecting rod small end (9) are fixed together by means of a shrunk-on ring (15) and/or screws (14, 16), a recess (10) of the connecting rod small end (9), in the case of a partial axial separation, enclosing the ball (5) formed on the piston head (2) over a circumference of more than 180 degrees. <IMAGE>
