The intention is for the adjusting device either to be equipped with a driving motor or with a handwheel and, whilst being of a design which saves space and is inexpensive to produce, for it to lock in a very efficient manner any movement of a driving wheel, which meshes with an operating element, on itself as a result of the motor-vehicle seat being loaded. To this end, it is, amongst other things, provided that a coupling disc which is on the driving side and has dogs protruding around the circumference and parallel to the axis constantly engages with in each case one tooth-shaped recess in a coupling disc on the output side, each dog being flanked by two clamping elements of which that clamping element which lies in front of the dog when the driving-side coupling disc is rotated, is capable of being pressed by the dog out of a tapering clamping region in the recess and against a tooth profile of the coupling disc on the output side. The adjusting device serves primarily for the longitudinal displacement of the entire motor-vehicle seat, but is also suitable for the separate adjustment of individual sections.
