In a programme-controlled dishwashing/washing machine comprising a housing containing rinsing container 2, and water softener comprising salt container 3 and ion exchanger 4, and provided with a water supply system comprising inlet valve 6, supply duct 9, air break 7, water storage chambers, flat filling container 5, siphon 13, and throughflow chamber 15, the latter is provided with a flow control device comprising a float-actuated switch arrangement 17, 18 for regulating the opening and closing of inlet valve 6, the arrangement being such that the total volume of liquid supplied to the rinsing container in each programme stage involving addition of water is a multiple of the volume of filling container 5 and that thereafter the inlet valve is kept closed until the next programme stage requiring addition of water.
