PURPOSE: To align a position of a printing mechanism to a paper on a line of text by storing data into a memory before a new line of text is started by a control means, and automatically finding the line of text at before and after adjacent position on a recording sheet. CONSTITUTION: When an operator punches a keyboard 14 for the command, a microprocessor 16 of a typewriter processes the command, and determines the desired moving direction. Then the microprocessor determines the known point in the memory stored in advance to determine the line of text including a mark to perform the scanning. The line of text to be determined is the following adjacent line of text in the desired direction at a position where the printing mechanism 15 exists. The position of the line is determined, the distance to be moved is determined, and whether the mark is found or not is checked. After the existence of the mark in a certain line of text is verified, the microprocessor generates the command under the control of a software with the configuration of a signal for driving a step motor 22, whereby the recording sheet 11 is moved to a desired position.
