Highly effective diuretic antihypertensives, i.e., sulfamoyl-2-benzofurancarboxylic acid derivatives which are classified as loop diuretics with less adverse side-effects and which can be administered orally, have the formula wherein R is hydrogen or a protecting group; R<1> and R<2> are the same or different and each is hydrogen, lower alkyl, 4- to 7-membered cycloalkyl, optionally substituted phenyl, phenyl-lower alkyl, lower alkoxycarbonyl, or morpholino-lower alkyl, or R<1> and R<2> taken together with the adjacent nitrogen atom may form an optionally substituted 5- or 6-membered heterocycle which may have an additional one or more hetero atoms; and X and X min are each independently hydrogen or halogen.
