PURPOSE:To improve contrast, memorizing property and reproducibility by previously applying orientation capacity to the surface of at least one substrate in almost the tilt angle of ferroelectric liquid crystal against the orientation direction of liquid crystal in inter-substrate orientation processing. CONSTITUTION:Rubbing processing is applied to at least one substrate out of a pair of transparent substrates 3, 4. The rubbing processing is executed by softly rubbing the surfaces of orientation films 7, 8 to one direction in the orientation direction of liquid crystal molecules based upon shearing method (inter-substrate orientation processing) and the tilt angle theta direction of liquid crystal. Prescribed ferroelectric liquid crystal 5 is held between the rubbed substrates 3, 4, and after ending the shearing processing to be the inter-substrate orientation processing, the two substrates 3, 4 are fixed by sealing members 6 such as epoxy group adhesives to complete a liquid crystal optical element. Thus, the liquid crystal optical element having high contrast, excellent memorizing property, high reproducibility, and high orientation can be obtained by rubbing the surfaces of the orientation films in two directions coincident with angles theta (tilt angles) orientated by an electric field. |
