PURPOSE:To well represent the positional neighborhood relation between picture elements forming a binary image, and to upgrade the efficiency of encoding by encoding the processing of a flat surface scanning or a three-dimensional surface scanning. CONSTITUTION:An Ns-dimensional memory 3 for scanning stores and holds binarized surface information representing a graphic or character express in chart, simulating a view as a scene in a memory. The simultaneous scanning in the directions of coordinate axes of a space in which said scene is formed, are recurrently and repeatedly executed to read the coordinates of picture elements of a graphic or a character, or others formed in the scene. In an encoder 4, the hierarchical data structure of surface information expressed in a tree structure is determined by using the coordinate values of the picture elements read in the process of said reccurrent and repeated simultaneous scannings as well as the information concerning the reccurrent repetitious processings attributive to respective picture elements, thus binarized surface information is encoded. As a result, the encoding of picture elements in which the positional neighborhood relations between picture elements forming a binary image, can be executed. |
