The clamping mechanism is for an interchangeable tool head, esp for turning, drilling or milling. It has a holder with taper bore and axial annular support face, particularly conical, containing a clamping screw, while the head has a tapering boss and support face whose cone angles are different from those on the holder, together with a tapped hole in the boss. The cone angles of the support face (3) and boss (2) of the head (1) are greater by a predetermined amount than those of the face (13) and bore (12) in the holder (10). The boss has an external annular groove (6) in its cone face (5), and internal one (7) in its tapped hole (4) at nearly the same axial distance from its support face (3).
