A modified tapping band (MTB) replacement tool (150) including an inner shaft (44) extending through the hollow middle shaft (32) and terminating in a foot (42) at a distal end; a middle shaft (32) including a first stopper compression means (28) towards a distal end and a deformable stopper (30); and an outer shaft (22) including second stopper compression means (18) towards a distal end. The deformable stopper (30) is located between the first and second stopper compression means. The tool further includes first urging means (26) for urging the first and second compression means towards one another thereby to cause lateral expansion of the deformable stopper; and second urging means (internal thread on compression means 28) for urging the laterally expanded stopper towards a proximal end of the inner shaft sub-assembly to seal the pipe opening.
