The invention relates to an auxiliary steering device which intervenes in the steering by means of an actuation cylinder (7). In order to control the adjustment of the actuation cylinder (7), two solenoid valves (21 and 22) are provided as actuation elements and a 3/2-way safety solenoid valve (23) is connected upstream of these two actuation element solenoid valves (21 and 22). With the aid of an electronic control device (14) and of the safety solenoid valve (23), the switching operation of the two actuation element solenoid valves (21 and 22) is monitored in such a way that in the event of an incorrect switching of the same the steering is not incorrectly influenced.
